Edward & Fredrick Bopp created the first Vertical blind in 1950. The two started their company ‘Sun Vertical’ and patented their blinds in 1960. Eventually, they sold off their company and patent in the same year, with their influence continuing today.
In the 1970s, there were limited options in fabrics and colours. Blind fabrics were turned stiff in the processing stage to prevent fraying with a beige and white colouring used. Now, premium and affordable window blinds have been through many technological developments. Vertical blinds are a modern alternative to drapes and horizontal blinds.
Vertical blinds feature slats that run top to bottom versus left to right like other blinds. They provide maximum control over light and privacy with low maintenance. They operate better on sliding doors and large windows which glide from side to side. Vertical blinds are a typical but elegant choice of blinds, being easy to use and find in stores.
Vertical blinds are useful for light and shade control since their early days. Verticals give you the freedom to handle how much light you desire in your room. You can sleep better by protecting your eyes from glare from streetlights and protecting your furniture or valuables from ultraviolet rays. They also provide privacy from their slats and allow you to adjust the amount of sunlight let in throughout the day.
Vertical blinds let homeowners maintain their blinds for longer than other conventual blinds. Vertical blinds are easy to clean with a cloth and can even be washing machine-friendly in some cases. Due to their design, they can be separated and swapped out for a unique look. Enjoy in either Christmas red or why not turn your blinds to the rainbow!
Vertical blinds provide long-term purposes at a low cost. They are recognised globally and provide an elegant look in any home or office. Vertical blinds are good alternatives to curtains for their lower price point. They are accessible to be purchased nationwide and easy to fit!
Verticals are versatile as they fit well. They can suit any window in any room in your home, bringing a joyful or smart aesthetics. Kid’s rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, offices or even kitchens are ideal for vertical blinds. With various fabrics, you can go bright or dark for a better sleep. The options are endless for vertical blinds!
Verticals are great and have been with us since the early 1950s. They have grown in style and practicality and are one of the most in demand blinds today. They can be found in millions of homes today and will be a part of history! Look at our website to find the Vertical blind for you!
Conservatory blinds are designed to help you get more from your space year-round. In spring and summer, they can soften harsh sunlight, reduce glare and make the room feel cooler during the day. In autumn and winter, they can help add an extra layer of insulation, making the space feel cosier and more comfortable.
Conservatories can quickly become hot when the sun shines through the roof and windows. The right blinds allow you to manage sunlight more effectively, helping reduce heat buildup while still letting natural light into the room. They can also help protect furniture, flooring and décor from fading caused by UV exposure.
A Stylish Solution for Modern Living
Practicality is important, but conservatory blinds should also enhance your home’s look. With a wide choice of styles, fabrics, colours and finishes available, you can create a finish that complements your existing décor.
Soft neutrals such as white, cream and beige are especially popular for conservatories, helping to keep the space feeling light, open and airy. However, if you want to add more character, you can also choose bolder colours, textured fabrics or patterned designs. At A1 Blinds, conservatory blinds are made to your exact specifications, giving you control over the style, fabric, measurements and operation. This ensures a neat, tailored finish that works with the unique shape and layout of your conservatory.
The Best Blinds for Conservatories
Every conservatory is different, so the best blinds for your home will depend on the size of the space, the direction it faces, how much sunlight it receives and how you use the room.
Vertical blinds – These are a popular choice for conservatory windows and patio doors. Their adjustable slats make it easy to control light and privacy throughout the day, while their sleek design works well across large glazed areas.
Perfect Fit blinds – Ideal for uPVC conservatory frames because they fit neatly into the window or door without drilling. This creates a clean, integrated look and makes them especially useful for tilt-and-turn windows or French doors.
Pleated blinds – Offering a soft, modern appearance with practical benefits; they are particularly effective for conservatories. This is due to their ability to help regulate light and temperature while maintaining a stylish finish.
Roof blinds – These can also be an important addition, especially in south-facing conservatories or rooms that receive direct overhead sunlight. By shading the roof area, you can help make the space more comfortable during the brightest parts of the day.
Enjoy Better Light Control This Summer
As summer approaches, many homeowners start using their conservatories more often. Whether you are enjoying a morning coffee, working from home, or entertaining friends, too much sunlight can make the space uncomfortable. Conservatory blinds give you the flexibility to adjust your shading as the light changes. You can reduce it during the day, create privacy in the evening, or open the blinds fully when you want to make the most of the sunshine.
This is particularly useful during late spring and summer, when lighter mornings and longer evenings can make conservatories feel exposed. With the right blinds, you can enjoy the benefits of natural light without letting it overwhelm the room.
Improve Privacy Without Losing Style
Conservatories are often positioned at the back or side of the home, which can sometimes leave them overlooked by neighbours, gardens or nearby pathways. Blinds allow you to enjoy your space in comfort without feeling exposed. Vertical blinds, shutters and Perfect Fit blinds are all effective choices for privacy because they allow you to adjust the view in and out. This means you can maintain natural light while still creating a more private and relaxing atmosphere.
Made-to-Measure Conservatory Blinds from A1 Blinds
Because conservatories often feature unusual shapes, large windows, roof panels and doors, made-to-measure blinds are the best way to achieve a precise finish. Off-the-shelf blinds rarely provide the same level of fit, performance or style.

The visit gave young people supported by the charity the opportunity to experience the full journey of how blinds are ordered, manufactured, sold and fitted – while also learning more about the different career opportunities available within the industry.
Managing Director Kevin Taylor said:
“Today we welcome the Smile For Life Charity, who is our chosen charity for 2026.”
To capture the day, we created a short video featuring interviews with Kevin Taylor, Paula Gascoigne, and the young people who visited A1 Blinds, highlighting the importance of creating opportunities, building confidence, and opening doors for the next generation.

Smile For Life supports children and young adults with disabilities, learning difficulties, autism, and those who may have faced difficult starts in life. The charity is passionate about helping young people build confidence, gain opportunities, and reach their full potential.
During the visit, Paula Gascoigne, Chief Executive of Smile For Life Children’s Charity, explained the importance of giving young people real-world experiences and helping businesses better understand the value these individuals can bring to the workplace.
Through initiatives such as work placements at Café Beam, the charity helps young people develop practical skills, confidence and independence in supportive working environments.
Paula explained:
“We are passionate about helping these youngsters to live life to their full potential and enjoy amazing opportunities like their non-disabled peers.”
The tour gave visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the A1 Blinds factory and showroom, introducing them to different areas of the business, from manufacturing and machinery through to customer service, sales and fitting roles.
One of the young visitors described the experience as:
“I’ve had a look at the amazing machinery. It’s just been a fantastic day, and I’d like to encourage more young people to come down and have a look.”
At A1 Blinds, we believe businesses can play an important role in supporting their local communities and helping create opportunities for young people of all backgrounds and abilities.
We’d like to thank Paula, Chris and everybody from Smile For Life for visiting us, and we look forward to continuing to support the charity throughout 2026.
As part of Smile For Life Children’s Charity’s ongoing fundraising efforts, an 11-person team of dedicated supporters will take on their biggest challenge yet later this year.
In August, the team will paddle more than 400km along the Yukon River in Canada, camping each night along the riverbanks while taking on the physical and mental challenge of the expedition – all to help raise vital funds for young people supported by the charity.
The team is aiming to raise an incredible £25,000 to help provide life-changing opportunities and experiences for youngsters with disabilities and additional needs.
If you would like to support the challenge and help Smile For Life continue its amazing work, donations can be made here.
At A1 Blinds, we offer a wide range of made-to-measure blinds designed to suit every room and every home style. Whether you want to reduce heat in a sunny conservatory, block out early-morning light in the bedroom, or create a fresh, seasonal look in your living room, the right window blinds can help your home feel summer-ready.
Why Blinds Matter During Summer
Summer can be lovely, but too much direct sunlight can quickly make rooms feel hot, bright, and uncomfortable. Large windows, patio doors, and conservatories are some of the key areas that can be affected by this.
Blinds can give you better control over how much sunlight enters your home. By closing or adjusting them during the hottest parts of the day, you can reduce direct heat and keep your home cooler without using any energy. This can be particularly useful in rooms that face the sun for long periods, such as bedrooms, kitchens, conservatories, and living rooms.
Choose Light-Coloured Blinds for a Fresh Summer Look
Colour plays an important role when choosing blinds for summer. Light-coloured blinds, such as white, cream, beige, and soft grey, can help create a bright and airy feel while reflecting more sunlight than darker shades.
These colours are ideal if you want to refresh your home for the season without making the space feel heavy or enclosed. Light tones work especially well with roller blinds, Venetian blinds, pleated blinds, and Perfect Fit blinds, giving your room a clean and modern finish while still offering practical light control.
Consider Blackout Blinds for Bedrooms
Blackout blinds are often associated with winter months, but they are just as useful during summer. With lighter mornings and longer evenings, bedrooms in particular can be a cause for concern.
Made-to-measure blackout blinds are designed to reduce unwanted light, making them a great choice for bedrooms, children’s rooms, nurseries, and any space where darkness and privacy are important. They can also help reduce the impact of direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day, keeping the room more comfortable.
Use Venetian Blinds for Flexible Light Control
Venetian blinds are a brilliant summer option because they allow you to adjust light levels throughout the day without fully closing off the room. Their horizontal slats can be tilted to soften harsh sunlight and maintain privacy, whilst still allowing natural light to brighten up your home.
They are a practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms, home offices, and living spaces. Faux-wood-style Venetian blinds are particularly common in rooms where moisture and humidity are issues. With their ability to withstand these elements, they are a practical choice for homeowners upgrading bathrooms or kitchens.
Keep Conservatories Comfortable
Conservatories, orangeries, and sunrooms can become very warm in summer due to the amount of glass they contain. The right conservatory blinds can help reduce glare, improve comfort, and make the space more usable throughout the day.
Perfect Fit blinds, pleated blinds, vertical blinds, and roof blinds are all popular options for conservatories. These styles can be tailored to suit individual window panels, doors, and roof areas, giving you a neat made-to-measure finish. By controlling the amount of direct sunlight entering the space, conservatory blinds can help turn your extension into a more enjoyable room during summer.
Think About Motorised Blinds for Convenience
When it comes to high windows, roof blinds, or hard-to-reach spaces, cleaning can become a real issue. Motorised blinds offer a convenient and modern solution. With simple controls, you can adjust your blinds at different times of the day without specialist equipment.
This is especially useful in sunny rooms where light levels change quickly. You can close blinds during peak sunlight hours and open them again in the evening when temperatures begin to cool. Motorised blinds are ideal for modern homes, conservatories, bedrooms, and larger living areas.
Balance Privacy, Shade, and Natural Light
The best summer blinds are not about completely blocking sunlight. In many rooms, you may want to enjoy natural light while reducing glare and maintaining some privacy.
Vertical blinds are ideal for patio doors and larger windows due to their adjustable slats, giving you complete control over light and visibility. Roller blinds are another great choice, offering simple, clean finishes that work well in any room. Depending on the fabric you choose, roller blinds can provide anything from soft filtered light to full blackout coverage.
Find the Best Summer Blinds for Your Home
Every home is different, so the best blinds for summer will depend on your room layout, window size, décor, and the amount of sunlight each space receives. A sunny conservatory may benefit from pleated or Perfect Fit blinds, while a bedroom may need blackout blinds to improve sleep. A kitchen or bathroom may suit easy-clean Venetian blinds, while a living room may call for stylish roller or vertical blinds.
At A1 Blinds, we make it easy to find the right solution. Our team can guide you through fabrics, colours, styles, and practical features to help you choose blinds that look great and perform well throughout the warmer months.
